Introducing... the Official Messi Card Collection!

by Al 8. April 2013 10:49

The world’s greatest player’s brand now has the world’s greatest card collection - the Official Messi Card Collection, launched by the Leo Messi brand and provided by Icons. This is the world’s first official collection of cards devoted to an individual footballer and is to be launched around the world in the week commencing April 12 by Icons, the most trusted supplier of football memorabilia in the game.

Each pack contains five glossy picture cards capturing the Barcelona star's finest moments both on and off the pitch, with 104 to collect in total - including four special gold cards. The cards also give fans the chance to win exclusive shirts, photos and other products signed by Leo Messi. Dan Jamieson, managing director of Icons, said: “We can all remember trading our prized cards with our friends in the playground looking for that much-coveted final card in the collection. But football card and sticker collections traditionally involve multiple clubs and multiple players. We’ve taken a different approach by focusing on one player and with Leo we’ve been able to create a collection that spans not just the football career of the world’s best footballer, but the man himself. This is the world’s best player and the perfect person to launch an individual card collection.”

Icons.com chairman Edward Freedman is the former managing director of Manchester United Merchandising and hailed by The Economist as “football’s merchandising guru”. Among Freedman’s many success stories are the Spice Girls, with whom he broke all sales records for pop band merchandise. The cards will be available from kiosks, convenience stores, 7-11 outlets, mini-marts, tobacconists, independent supermarkets, shopping mall locations along with the Relay chain of outlets.

For more information on this product or Icons.com, or for interviews with Dan Jamieson or Edward Freedman, please contact Ben Lee on blee@hardhat.co.uk or +44 7961 820 579.

He's scored in 19 consecutive La Liga matches, but can Leo Messi become a UEFA Champions League record-breaker this week too?

by Al 2. April 2013 04:20

Another match, another goal, another record in the bag. Leo Messi was once more on the score sheet this weekend as Barcelona drew 2-2 against La Liga strugglers Celta Vigo, the 19th consecutive league game he has now scored in. This means he's now netted against every team in La Liga uninterrupted - the first person in history to do so.

The strike - a predatory first-time low shot into the corner - was his 43rd league goal of the season and another milestone in the career of a player who seems to set records each time he runs out on a pitch these days. Case and point? A goal tonight against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League will make him the first player to score in 20 different cities in the competition, surpassing Real Madrid legend Raul's current record (19). "The important thing is to win," says Messi. That might be so, but there's no underestimating the sheer scale of his individual accomplishments. This is a player unlike anything we've seen before - history perpetually in the making.

Even PSG's notorious Zlatan Ibrahimovic - a man not exactly renowned for doling out compliments to other players, let alone the one who forced his exit from the Nou Camp in 2010 - heaped praise on Messi ahead of his clash with the Argentine this evening. "I think today for sure Messi is the best player in the world," said the Swede. "He has been winning this golden ball for so long now maybe they should change itss name from the Ballon d'Or to the Messi."

"He breaks every record there is and is still young, but is he the best ever? I think he has to quit football and then you can say if he is the best there has been," Ibrahimovic went on to tell reporters. "We can talk about it now, but when he quits playing I will answer." That time will one day come but unfortunately for the Swede and his PSG team mates, it won't be before this evening.

What next for Leo Messi? The records he could break in 2013

by Al 10. January 2013 05:38

How do you follow a year like the one had by the irrepressible Leo Messi? With 91 goals in 69 games, a record fourth FIFA Ballon d'Or award and acclaim at every corner, the Barcelona star came into 2012 hoping to prove himself as the best player in the world. He left it to whispers that he might just be the best of all time.

So what next for the man who appears to break records without breaking a sweat? Perhaps the scariest thing about the Argentine's acheivements to date is is that at age 25, he's only approaching what should be his peak. Gerd Muller was 27 before he hit 85 goals to set the record for most goals scored in a single calendar year - a record Messi eased past in 2012 with two years and five goals to spare. With five domestic trophies, three more than Diego Maradona at the same age, and a succession of European titles to his name, the thought that the best is yet to come from the famous number 10 is one that will be keeping defenders awake at night as the world reflects on an amazing fourth consecutive world player of the year award this week. Here's a few records Messi may have his eye on as 2013 continues to get underway.

Most European goals

The Barcelona striker has scored 56 goals in the UEFA Champions League in just 74 games, putting him on level with Thierry Henry (57 goals in 139 games) and just 15 off the record set by Raul despite having played half the number of European fixtures as the Spanish great. Becoming the record European goalscorer would be a significant achievement for Messi. Doing it in fewer than 100 games would be phenomenal. It's also worth noting Messi has been top scorer in the Champions League four times, equalling the record set by Gerd Muller. Another year as prolific as the last - he scored 14 in last season's competition and has already 4 in this year's competition - and he'll have taken another record from the German legend.

Best La Liga goalscorer

Messi is still some 55 goals off the record number of La Liga goals scored by Bilbao marksman Telmo Zarra, who terrorised defences between 1940-56. Zarra scored 251 league goals across his career with an impressive conversation rate of 0.91 but could be about to have his record usurped by the Argentine who currently has 196 domestic strikes to his name.

Diego Maradona's feats

Deployed in similar number 10 role (though Messi is more of an out and out striker than his much loved countryman), Messi has long been compared to El Diego for his intricate style of play and compelling style on the ball. With 227 career goals to date, Messi can feasibly put that comparison to bed in 2013 by scoring 85 times to overtake Maradona's 311 total career goals to be recognised finally as a phenomenon in his own right. Some would suggest he won't truly surpass Maradona till he's led his national team to World Cup glory as Diego did but in new coach Alejandro Sabella, Messi has a manager whose tactics may better suit the style of football he's used to at Barcelona - during his playing days, former Leeds star Sabella was nicknamed Sloth for his penchance for patient, measured passing build up play. Sound familiar? Anyway, Maradona was 26 before leading Argentina to a famous 1986 World Cup victory - the same age Messi will be heading into next year's tournament in Brazil. An omen? It could well be...

Icons' sporting moments of 2012

by Al 2. January 2013 04:53

Happy new year from all at Icons! With the dust now settled on 2012 and any New Year's Eve hangovers now subsided, there's a fine year of sport and plenty of exciting new Icons products to look forward to. But before that, what were the Icons team's favourite sporting moments of the past 12 months?

Ben Soley

"Technically as a Liverpool fan it should be Liverpool winning the League Cup but nothing compares to that Sergio Aguero goal that won Man City the title. The last kick of the season and it won the title. Just amazing. There aren't many moments like that."

Dan Jamieson

"I'd say the Olympic Games but everyone will say that. I'll be a bit different and say the England cricketers winning in India for the first time for a generation."

Al Horner

"Watching Leo Messi score five goals in one game was up there. It was just a total masterclass, history in the making. But for sheer euphoria, it has to be the Olympic's Super Saturday when Jess Ennis stole the show."
