As a lifelong fan, it was written in the stars that Tony Cottee would go down in West Ham's history books as one of their best players of the modern era. He made his début for the Hammers in 1982 and (after a successful six year spell with Everton), made his final appearance at Upton Park in 1996, scoring well over 100 league goals.
Tony was named as the PFA Young Player of the Year in 1986 and picked up a League Cup winners' medal in 2000 with Leicester City.
His international opportunities were limited due to the likes of Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer, but he won seven caps for England. For two weeks, Tony was the most expensive player ever signed by a British club, when Everton paid £2.2 million for his services, but the record was eclipsed when Ian Rush rejoined Liverpool from Juventus in the same month. Nonetheless, Tony is remembered fondly by fans of every club he turned out for.
